Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. While a small infant, Ford struggled with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her fellow students. Ford was not able to finish her studies in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her debut on television in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately being a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition for her comedy stand-up that became part of her portfolio in the year 1996.
